Loch Ness's bathometry has never been charted. So who knows if there is some lair down there were these creatures live? or it's some large fish species, or marine mammal, that we've never catalogued.

The lock is relatively knew, created by glaciers 16,000 or so years ago, so there is nothing very ancient.

More plausible theories say it/they are overgrown eels, sturgeon, or greenland sharks, but mos likely, there is nothing remarkable there and it is a combiantion of hoaxes, riptides, misidentification of size/distance or common animals, logs that fell in the water, animals swiimming in formation, and just good old fashioned tall tales.

On the other hand it could be a ruse to boost local tourism.

Aye there's money to be made from wee nessie.:zany:

Loch Ness Marathon
Hardly from the beginning, but perhaps these days. Have seen far worse sceneries for a marathon.

(Took some time again to reread 48 amazing testimonials covering 89 pages, concerning observations of the so called drake/lindorm/hjulorm by normal country folks in southern Sweden up to 1884. Same story: large snakelike being, large finger long white teeth, hair or scales behind the head raised by the angry animal, overall dark on the back, lighter on the belly. Some claimed to have seen "ears" behind the eyes and a tail with hair looking like a cow's tail. Some were killed by the observers after long fights with branches and stones, and thereby studied closer. In two cases the angry animal spitted a white stinking fluid from the mouth, which smelled like sour milk. The dead animals were stinking like hell. One observer was sick for days after the encounter. In one case the dead drake was carried on sticks and buried in an ant hill. A check three days later, the hill was totally abandoned by the ants.)

Yes, this must be a sort of weird eel. Nothing else could explain the testimonials.
