Which countries were federations for a very long time? So far, I could think of the US, Canada, Australia, Austria-Hungary, and the USSR. However, what other countries were already federations before World War II?

Switzerland and Germany. Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and possibly Peru all have constitutions modeled on the US with semi autonomous states, at least in law if not always in fact. India's states are also semi autonomous. Russia calls itself the Russian Federation.

Yep, I forgot about those two--especially Germany.

Have these Latin American countries always existed as federations, though? Same question for India. Also, was the Russian SFSR itself a federation as well in Soviet times or was it a unitary entity like US states are?

Well for Latin America, their constitutions were modeled on that of the US as federal republics. Many were dictatorships at various times, but in law if not in fact they were and are federal republics.

From 1947 India has granted states local autonomy. Recently this was withdrawn from Kashmir but the status of that state has long been controversial. The Republic of India has only existed since 1947.

As for Russia it was the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic.

What is the difference? To me it was more of a federation than some Latin American country with artificial states or the Soviet Union, which was really a unified empire.
A federation means an actual unified state whereas a confederation is more like the European Union.

Latinamerican countries were federal only in name. Most of them (I can't remember an exception) are strongly centralist, more alike to France than to the US

The UK can be considered a federation, short lived (1998). However, many elements of the UK looks like a dual Commonwealth between England and Scotland since the very beginning in 1707
