Despite the threat of growing communism, should the United States have intervened in the Afghanistan War?

So, did they want the Soviets to win or were they simply completely indifferent to the outcome of this war?
They were blowing all their extra money on welfare state, besides Mrs Thatcher in the UK. They didn't care as long as western Europe wasn't invaded. The US was the big spender to stop world communism. So it came down partly to US, but largely to various Islamic countries, especially the Gulf States, who primarily funded the war.
