the aristocrats that arrived with john smith at jamestown would have starved for their belief that they did not work. it is a merit to smith himself that they were 'encouraged' to get their finger out.

That's oversimplifying them a bit. It wasn't that they did not want to work, they assumed, like most people did, that the New World was full of gold and spices and jewels just lying about the land. When they arrived in Virginia, their fantasies were dashed and they were not accustomed to the notion of tilling soil and building their own homes because they did not do so at Home.

Didn't his younger brother William IV have a similarly bad reputation?
Not really. William IV was actually very popular when he came to the throne. He promised to reduce the expenses of the royal household and, by the time of his death, had done a fair amount to restore the reputation of the royal house after the disasters of his father and brother's reigns. He lived for about twenty years with an actress, spat in public and had a good number of eccentricities, but his reputation was never that bad.

That's also oversimplifying them a bit.

Young oysters (or bi-valves) are called spats. As for the footwear, it makes sense - why wear your socks outside your shoes??
Was the purpose of spats to keep socks clean? Or was it to hide the fact you didn't wear socks? Or was it just a stupid fashion?
