I think they were predominantly fashion but did perform a function (cleanliness and warmth). As for their demise, I think they became the victim of function. Fashion from the 1940s dictated a lighter type of shoe. Boots were replace by slip-ons, open-toed shoes.Was the purpose of spats to keep socks clean? Or was it to hide the fact you didn't wear socks? Or was it just a stupid fashion?
