Disappeared "countries" of the past Century in fiction?

Just wonder how novellists etcetera see those "countries" (since some were rather empires, like the Austrian Hungarian or Soviet Union). They would include the before mentioned, then also Yugoslavia, Checkoslovakia, the GDR, the late Ottoman Empire, the Empire of the Russian Tsars, including Finland. In a way lands as Ireland when it still was under London.

wondering about speculative fiction featuring countries that no longer exist?
what the world would be if WWI had ended different or colonialism never ended?

for years I have tried to find a globe from the 1920s with old country names (Persia, Siam, German East Africa). I think that would be kewl.
