Axes had existed for a long time. Stone and bronze axes had been found in various early Chinese (Sinitic and Non-Sinitic) cultures. However later in the Iron-Age swords and sabers had largely replaced them. The use of axes saw a resurgence in the Song period, possibly due to the need to break through heavy armor. And later in the Ming it fell again due to the rise of firearms.
