Why was this artisan nicknamed "el greco"? He never said he was greek. Moreover, he quite often signed his paintings simply with "kris" (cretan).

He was called "El Greco" because he was of Greek origin. Btw. Allthough art is a matter of taste, calling him an artisan (on purpose or by mistake?) is a bit far-fetched. I think he was one of the greatest painters of all times.
