You're right about the founders giving us the Electoral College because they did not want the president elected directly - just like they didn't want senators elected directly either. I should have asked, "Why do we still have the Electoral College?" especially considering that we did away with indirect election of senators a century ago. You're also right about small states being reluctant to give up their over-representation in the EC as one reason we still have it.
