One wonders why your Jesus allows these pedo priests to abuse children , in his own church .
This is a distinction that needs to be emphasised. Their Jesus, the one invented by the Catholic Church, is not the Jesus we read about in the New Testament. Their Jesus is a perverted construction designed to maintain the authority and infallibility of the Catholic Church and its heirarchy.

In the interests of full disclosure, I am a Catholic but am just as disgusted with the Church and the Vatican as non Catholics.

One must remember the Roman Catholic Church is one of the world's oldest continuous organization, whose current role is far beyond saving souls. More than anything, its a bank. And the Pope and the Bishops are a mix of banker, salesman, and politician. Nobody good rises to the highest levels without at the very least being complicit in the Church's many institutional sins, including the mortal ones. If there was justice, everyone in the Vatican would be excommunicated for a fresh start from untainted outsiders.

... also, what about his 'defense' ... his lawyer 'pleaded' to the court ;

" Richter tried to argue there were “no aggravating circumstances” to one of the offences. It was “no more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating,” he told the court.

What the hell is THAT supposed to mean !
I think I get what he wanted to say. But he did it stupidly with no sense.

His client was already found guilty so his new task is to try to reduce sentence. He can't really tackle anything besides the idea that Pell, acting in positions of authority, used his power to facilitate the rape. The lawyer wanted to argue that the case was just about a regular guy rsping a kid, not about a powerful person mistreated their position, which makes the crime worse because not only did they commit a horrible crime, they abused their power to do it.

Its why nobody cares when a 35 year old has sex with a 16 year old. But when its a teacher, it becomes nationwide news and the 35 year old ends up doing hard time.

Lawyer's choice of words were horrible, he destroyed his legal career uttering them.

I hope that isn't suggesting the church is less guilty ?

Yes those things have happened in other organizations. But Pell and the church is specifically odorous. With other organizations, they don't protect their pedo suspects with a huge mega rich multi national organization and just shuffle them around the place to abuse others. This is an institution which supposedly is in charge of peoples spiritual development . Pell was charged with supposedly helping to resolve the abuse issue as well. And also he had a smug "can't touch me" attitude.

He was also the spokesperson for catholic morals " His schitck was sex " reporters pointed out . He was the churches moral spokesperson; no sex before marriage , no IVF for unmarried, no homosexuals, dont use contraceptives etc etc ... the churches position on sex was echoed and reinforced by him , he made it his career and used that to advance his position .

Extremely hypocritical .
Shocking. With evil at the top like that, what hope is there for organized Christianity? No wonder paganism and other belief systems are growing so much.

Not to underline that among about 2,500,000,000 Christians only a bit more than 1,285,000,000 are Catholics [the number can vary from an estimate to an other, in any case Catholics are around the 50% of the Christians].

But this is a different matter.

What's relevant here is that a criminal has reached the high hierarchy of an organization which should be in some way pure, better than common human societies. Living in Italy, I know Catholics and they say that you have to punish the sin, not the sinner [Typical Catholic philosophy ]. But in this case there is a criminal.

If a Cardinal meets a nun in a church and they have a consensual sexual intercourse, making sex like two mandrills for hours ... that's a sin and not a crime.
