A myth, nothing else. In 1900 nobody in Paris carred about Alsace Lorraine. And nobody was ready to go for a war for Alsace Lorraine.

It was the Belle époque after all.

Then why did France ally with Russia instead of, say, trying to ally with Germany?
France did ally with Russia because after 1870 France did not have any ally.
The politic of Bismark was to isolate France. To ally with Germany was impossible because of the prussian military cast.

I thought that Germany would have loved to have France as an ally since it would have secured its western flank.
