Probably the empire of Axum. The kingdom existed as early as 400 BCE
Nope, the first concrete mention comes from the first century AD. What are you refering to are the Proto-Aksumite cultures, who have not too much to do with later Aksum, except beeing on the same territory.

Zulu's achievements were largely military.

Asante had a sophisticated governance system, as did Benin and Dahomey. Zulu didn't, imho. Considering how most European countries were in the early modern period, I don't think they were that much worse off.

It's a shame really, because as much as I admire the Zulu, they have forever brought that stereotype, that we're savage people who fought barefoot and lived in huts, after the Brits conqueror South Africa.
