Gupta empire was the best. It defines almost everything India as we know it today. Classical India developed under them.

Second would be Pala empire because Indian way of life developed further.

Third would be Mauryan empire because they invented writing and conquered south india to make India one country.

Fourth would be Vijayanagara because against the backdrop of Muslim depradations they maintained a Hindu empire.

Fifth and reluctantly would be Akbar's empire. Reluctant because after 350 years of Muslim marauding, he created a systematised Muslim administration of great efficacy and caused maximum of religious conversions by his adoption of Sufism. His successors however used his administration to cause great oppression of Hindus. Jahangir was the richest emperor ever by these

I dont understand why so many Dynasties were mentioned in this list. 70 % of the Dynasties dont even deserve to be mentioned in the list

Perhaps a better phrasing would be the greatest empire/dynasty to rule IN India, since very few of these dynasties ruled enough of the subcontinent to be called the Rulers of India.

While I've voted for the Guptas, there's a clear lack of criterion here. What is the definition of greatest? Is is military power? In which case it has to go to the Mughals, British or the Mauryans. Is it cultural innovations? I would say Mughals or Guptas. Is it stability? Then the answer would likely be the Guptas. And yes, how come the British aren't on here? They were certainly one of the most powerful forces to rule over India. And why only the Mughals and none of the other major Muslim empires? The poll's too long as well. Many of these dynasties, the Ahom for instance, were highly regional and relatively small when looking at Indian history as a whole. Not to discount their importance in the history of their regions, but if you're going to discuss dynasties from a pan-Indian perspective, you'd best leave the smaller ones out.

Because these are real ancient empires not ones created by gun fire. Fought by hand.
Huh? So Gunpowder empires are illegitimate and not "real"? The Mughal Empire is on that list, and neither the Mughals nor the Sultanate or indeed Vijaynagara and many others were "ancient".
