Situation is rapidly evolving. Peel the top layer of an onion, there is another layer to peel. I have pulled two from the original list and added two very gigantic sets that are now silly cheap (> 90% off) on the Web.

Encyclopedia of American Cultural and Intellectual History - 1999 | 2001
A massive 2,436 pages weighing 16 LBS and spread over three volumes.
Cost new: $1,090. Now selling for $28, ex library, clean.

Encyclopedia of American Social History - 1993
A whopping 2,653 pages weighing 20 LBS and spread over three volumes.
Cost new: $420. Now selling for $24, ex library, clean.

Still on the list, but threatened:

The American Heritage Encyclopedia of American History – 1998

Reader's Companion to American History Hardcover – 1991

Evolving Alignment is Moving Towards Multiple Volumes

Just in the time of this discussion, I have become more aligned with the multiple-volume-but-single-subject approach to American-history encyclopedias.

Market is the same former-library stock being blown out online for barely enough money to ship the mass.
