How come South Korea was able to survive while South Vietnam wasn't?

Small countries have no way to decide their own destiny. the topic should be viewed from the relationship between major powers.

In the cold war, both the United States and the Soviet Union were willing to support their own camp. This ideological opposition. China, Vietnam and Korea are all split. South Korea and Taiwan survived. The reason is that the oceans protect them.

China, Vietnam and South Korea all have strong national will to reunify. But the strength of the two camps is different. The Communist camp is good at land warfare. The democratic camp is good at Naval warfare. So we will not launch the Third World War. Neither side can defeat the other. Under the compromise between the US and the Soviet Union. That's the situation today.

Expand it. China and Korea will still pursue national unity. And the Soviet Union has disbanded. If the United States does not change. The war will surely come back. Or it's not over.

A conventional Chinese military intervention to support the North Vietnamese in the event of U.S. invasion would have been much more realistic, though.
It looks unlikely. Please note that the middle of the Vietnam war coincided with the peak of the Soviet-Chinese standoff. It's difficult to imagine joint actions of China and the USSR in Vietnam during the Damansky incident

Korean war looked like a world conflict, between the UN and 95% of the communist camp, pre-WW3.
For both sides it was impossible to fail, because of evident ideological consequences. So the truce looked the best way out.
Vietnam war was rather another local conflict USA vs USSR, as many other conflicts in different parts of the world.
Both competitors had victories and defeats by then, and the outcome of the Vietnam war seemed to be not so critical,
taking in the mind separate position of China, that didn't permit Soviet Union to reach absolute domination in the region.

The USA was in worse position, because of high direct losses and pacifist actions.
The casualties among soviet "military advisors" were low and Soviet leadership was not limited by public opinion.
