How do you study history as a hobby

I tend to start with something that catches my interest. Since I'm trained in academic history, I tend to want to find an academic monograph first. Then I go to the bibliography and start going after the works listed there.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm still a little prejudiced against popular histories. I still love to read them, though. Some are great and the research is meticulous. Others I wonder where they found the author and how they got a book deal in the first place.
