How is the wealth level of Ancient/Mediaeval states calculated/compared

very interesting, if due to the shifting tribal nature of barbarian groups made it too hard to estimate their economic strength, has it been done on more developed ancient states like the Parthians?

I am sure there are more papers out there dealing with specific aspects but I am not aware of a holistic economics estimate made specifically of the Parthian empire- just not enough data and it is particularly difficult in the case of Parthia due to geography with so much mountains, deserts, and borderline arable land not to mention the climate changes and overuse of many areas which we know were farmed previously but have been reclaimed by desert.
