How much of a problem was sex in ancient times ?

Sex was seen by a number of ancient cultures who didn't have abstract non-anthropomorphic gods as a sacred and symbolic act.

After all, you need to have sex to have children to perform the work of the society, fight its wars and preserve it. Human fecundity was seen as the same force operating in nature and coming from the divine. There may have been taboos etc. in some cultures, but probably as a selective force governing societal regulation of something very important for survival, especially when there was high infant mortality and shorter life spans.
