I've heard that China has kept to a word-based written language instead of a sound-based one like English because of the many different languages spoken within it. It still seems like if the different languages weren't closely related, the word-order would be too different to be easily readable. How similar is the word order of the various Chinese languages?

If you are talking about grammar than most chinese languages are quite similar with word order, for example they are all Subject Verb Object as far as I know. The big differences between different chinese languages comes in pronunciation which varies wildly from 2-6 tones with the possible additions of glottal stops.
