How to Reliably Verify Sources

Whenever I'm reading a book, website or any other form of a source and come across a claim I didn't see before or something that conflicts with other data elsewhere I am skeptical about the legitimacy of the information. In this case my way to check is to look at Wikipedia or some other online source, look for the origins of the website or book I found the data in or ask my peers if they know something about it. However even then I'm sometimes unsure about the accuracy of the data. What is the best way to check sources and confirm the accuracy of information in question.
