If Islam is so misogynistic, why are most ex-Muslims men?

The Allah of Arabs before Islam had no beef with women, there were female prophets, female leaders, female poets, female business leaders. Khadija, the Prophet's first wife is a perfect example of that. Islam and Islamic mindsets totally stagnated Arabs and that is simply because of the initial success in wars to build an Islamic empire around the Middle East.

Allah's beef with women started with the Quran with all its ayats about controling women folk:

Women have rights that are similar to men, but men are "a degree above them." 2:228
http://quran.com/2/228

A woman is worth one-half a man. 2:282
http://quran.com/2/282

Males are to inherit twice that of females. 4:11
http://quran.com/4/11

Lewd women are to be confined to their houses until death. 4:15
http://quran.com/4/15

If any of your women get lewd, cut off their inheritance. 4:19
http://quran.com/4/19

O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth.--33:50

Virgins await those who enter paradise. 2:25, 4.57, 37:40-48, 38:52, 44:54, 52:20

Allah will give those in the Garden women of modest gaze whom neither man nor jinn have touched. (Or it might be white raisins instead of modest virgins.) 55:56, 55:72-74

Men are in charge of women, because Allah made men to be better than women. Women must obey men, and if they refuse they must be punished. Refuse to have sex with them and beat them into submission (Islam). 4:34
http://quran.com/4/34

Don't marry women that are already married -- unless they're slaves that you obtained in war. Then it's OK. 4:24

If you can't afford to marry free Muslims women, go ahead and marry slaves, as long as they're Muslims. 4:25a

If your slave wives are guilty of lewdness, punish them half as much as you punish your lewd free wives. 4:25c
http://quran.com/4/25

Don't pray if you are drunk, dirty, or have touched a woman lately. 4:43

Don't bother trying to treat your wives fairly. It's impossible. 4:129
http://quran.com/4/129

When it's time to pray and you have just used the toilet or touched a woman, be sure to wash up. If you can't find any water, just rub some dirt on yourself. 5:6

Lot offers his daughters to a mob of angel rapers. 11:78, 15:71

"The guile of you women ... is very great." 12:28

You don't have to be modest around your wives or your slave girls "that your right hand possess." 23:6

If you accuse an honorable women of adultery, be sure to bring four witness. Otherwise you will receive 80 lashes. 24:4

A husband can accuse his wife of adultery with only one witness (himself). But he has to swear five times (so he can count as four or more separate witnesses in accordance with 24:6
http://quran.com/24/4-6

Believing women must lower their gaze and be modest, cover themselves with veils, and not reveal themselves except to their husbands, relatives, children, and slaves. 24:31
http://quran.com/24/31

"And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), write it for them if ye are aware of aught of good in them, and bestow upon them of the wealth of Allah which He hath bestowed upon you. Force not your slave-girls to whoredom."
Well, I guess this is about as good as it gets in the Quran. Allah encourages you to set your slaves free if they are good enough. And don't pimp out your slave-girls (concubines). 24:33
http://quran.com/24/33

The wives of Muhammad will be punished double for lewdness. (And that is easy for Allah.) 33:30
http://quran.com/33/30

The wives of Muhammad are not like other women. They must not leave their houses. 33:32-33
http://quran.com/33/32-33

Allah says it is lawful for Muhammad to marry any woman, and however many women, he wants. 33:50-51
http://quran.com/33/50-51

Women must cover themselves when in public. 33:59
http://quran.com/33/59

Those who "did wrong" will go to hell, and their wives will go to hell with them (no matter how they behaved). 37:22-23
http://quran.com/37/22-23

Your wives and children are your enemies. They are to you only a temptation. 64:14-15
http://quran.com/64/14-15

Muhammad's wives need to be careful. If they criticize their husband, Allah will replace them with better ones. 66:5
http://quran.com/66/5

The wives of Noah and Lot (who were both righteous) betrayed their husbands and are now in the Fire. 66:10
http://quran.com/66/10

Doom is about to fall on all disbelievers. Only worshippers (Muslims) and those who preserve their chastity (except with their wives and slave girls) will be spared from "the fires of hell" that are "eagar to roast." 70:1-30
http://quran.com/70/1-30

Menstruation is a filthy disease. All good Muslim men should stay the hell away from menstruating women And for God sakes, don't have sex with them while they're menstruating. It creeps Allah out just to think of it. 2:222a

But don't worry guys. After they clean up you can have sex with them whenever you want. Allah loves clean men as much as he hates menstruating women. 2:222b

In the mind of Allah, women are like a dirty field for men to plow with their penises. Plow them whenever you like (as long as they're not menstruating, of course.) 2:223
So the question is, since Islam is so controlling over women. Why are the majority of the people who apostatize from Islam men? You would think it would be the other way around.

Interesting subject. The theory I was taught in high school (it's been awhile since I last discussed this) was that as Islam expanded and Muhammad and his supporters gained more power and influence, they came into contact with more people from Mesopotamia. Apparently, Mesopotamia going back to Sumerian times was never the place to be a woman. For instance, the veil and headscarf are believed to have originated from pre-Muslim Mesopotamia (I don't remember what else to be honest). And once Mesopotamia was conquered and became the center of the Muslim world, its influence on Islam grew. Like any proselytizing religion, Islam adopted customs of local peoples and adapted to their cultures.

The same can also be said about sexism in Christianity. Everyone always cites Paul for being a huge sexist in Corinthians. But we must remember that Paul was writing to the Greeks, who were notoriously sexist in ancient times. I doubt that either Paul or Muhammad were born as sexists, but they were opportunists who wanted to spread their religion and knew how to appeal to certain groups of people.

Hmm, could be. However Muhammad was not preaching to the Mesopotamians, he was preaching to the Pagan Arabs, it was only after he died that Islam reached Mesopotamia, at least that is what the traditional origins narrative says.

But you may be right that those other societies were as misogynistic as Muhammad or even more. We will never know for sure because we know so much less about them, all of their beliefs are not written plainly in a holy book for us all to scrutinize today.

But anyway, according to the traditional Muslim account. Muhammad himself said all that misogynistic stuff which he got direct from Allah. But it is certainly possible that a bunch of Mesopotamians wrote that stuff years later....

But regardless of the origin of the Quran, the real question of the thread is, seeing as Islam is so misogynistic, why are most people who give it up males?

Actually Mesopotamia was at some point matriarchal and Muhammed was preaching to the Arabs not Iraquis. Neither were the Corinthians sexist.

Perhaps the women who want to give it up face more sanctions and more danger.
Yes, that might be part of it. Or it could be that men have greater autonomy to study, greater freedom to practice as little or as much of Islam as they like without social exclusion as long as they "appear" to still be muslim and, in general, have more educational opportunities to see the injustice and inhumanity within the religion, so they are more likely to question the beliefs in the first place.

Whereas since women do not have the same oppurtunities to leave the home, to travel, and to study, their beliefs are not challenged as much.

It is much easier to brainwash people when they are confined to the home and not given educational opportunities.

A good analogy is Aisha, Muhammad's child bride. When the Prophet (Peace be upon him) came to her tent at the age of 9 and did whatever he did to her, she was at such a young age and that is all she knew so she just accepted it as normal.

Muslim women born into Islam, just like Aisha, have no understanding of the outside world. For them this is reality and they are brainwashed about the world outside being even worse then the Islamic one they know.

Because they are scared of punishment or being shamed out of the family. At a guess of course, I can't read minds. In the cases where women are oppressed, it is most easy to see why they do not leave, fear.

Possibly because they are in a better position to escape the consequences of de-conversion. An ex-Muslim woman in a devoutly religious Islamic nation is unlikely to be so fortunate.

Many women convert to Islam and marry Muslim men, so there is clearly something about the religion that appeals to them. Possibly the fact that, unlike Christianity, Islam doesn't constantly change its rules to fit in with modern secular trends. Also, since Muslim men are raised to expect to be the heads of their families, they are probably not as wimpy as most western men.
