Is prostitution cathegorically wrong, and should it be legal?

Should remunerated sex be legal between consenting adults?

  • Legal and regulated. Albeit controversial, it is a profession, basically.

What is your opinion on the legal status of prostitution (sexual services for money)?

Feel free to discuss as well your opinion on other remunerated sexual services not quite covered by the definition of prostitution (striptease and pornography, most obviously), and feel as free to explain the difference. Also feel free to say whether certain activites thriving along with prostitution but not necssary for its existence (such as brothels and procuring) should be legal as well, thought it's not part of the poll.

If no alternative fits you perfectly, choose the one that feels closest. Countries (basically) responding to the alternatives would be, respectively; the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden, the US and... I don't know (possibly Saudi Arabia, or Iceland in a few years).

Yes, i think prostitution should be legal. While some woman may feel forced into it, other do it simply because they see it as a good way of making money. If it was made legal, you could regulate it, ensuring the woman are given health checks and are kept safe.

I just don't get the thinking behind things like this being illegal. Who is harmed by this 'crime'.

I am against prostitution since it turns love into a commodity and thereby alienates the practioner from an essential part of their being. However, it is their body and they have a right to use it as they wish.
Of course this does not include forced prostitution, which is the norm.
Sex with someone you love is more intense. So even from a practical self interest perspective prostitution is deficient.

But theres a big difference between having sex and making love. maybe people go out on a weekend and end up having sex with somone they have not meet before.

Sex is just an act of pleasure.

It's not called the oldest profession for nothing. While there are those willing to pay for sex there will be those willing to provide it.

Love and sex are different things and while one can and does enhance the other, they are not co-dependent.

It should be a social service for the inadequate run by volunteers rather than the abused and drug-addicted serving moneyed bullies.

Interesting. What should be the qualifications for a volunteer?

Eight votes in favour, so far, none against.

I think it should be legal, though I think it is a trade rather than a profession. But I can't really see any justification for it being illegal, or why sexual services should not be bought and sold like any other service.
