As far as a 'career move' Dr. Hawass doesn't need the exposure. He appears to be doing fine.

For his major contributions to the field of Egyptology, Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) was chosen by the La Asociación Plataforma Para Fomento de los Oficios Artisticos (APFOA) as the 2010 Personality of the Year. A Spanish delegation from the APFOA, led by Francisco Lara, is here in Cairo to present the award to Dr. Hawass on Wednesday, December 8th at his office in Zamalek.

When every article and paper coming out of Egypt has Hawass' name on it, you just gotta wonder..

I do admit that that part of it is a bit egotistical. But maybe he had to rubber stamp a lot of things.

I think he is good for Egyptian archaeology. There is a lot of serious research going on in Egypt, especially at sites like Amarna and it should be made public. Hawass is good at presenting research to the general public and making it interesting.

On a side note - if he has control over the research then it is probably a good thing that filters out all the amateur treasure and alien hunters. He will not be around forever and future researchers will eventually reinterpret his work.

Who can forget the Nefertiti imbroglio. Hawass declared Fletcher "will never be a good Egyptologist" because apparently she broke the rules of the council - yet he flip-flopped on the sex of the mummy, first agreeing it was female but then, after Fletcher finished her work, claimed her theory couldn't be true because the mummy is that of a male. Of course he made no attempts to qualify this change of heart.

Hawass is a westernized Egyptologist. He's like a cancerous boil donned with a cowboy hat.

I hear rumors that the demonstrations and violence in Cairo is a direct reaction to the premier three days ago of Hawass' "Chasing Mummies" on Egyptian cable TV.

Any truth to this?
