At what point in India's history could it have become the main center of Western factories or become a viable competitor against a China?

How could a world with our iphone say 'Made in India'?
Could this cause the rise of india instead of china?

We've had this discussion before. The consensus is that it is too difficult to do business in India due to the unreliability of Indian operators and the corruption of Indian institutions. You have to expend so much resources on oversight that most ventures become unviable.

Maybe if Britain would have industrialized India to a much, much greater extent during the British Raj period than it did in real life? At the very least, this would have allowed India to get a head-start in regards to this relative to China.

Maybe if they hadn’t been so quick to adopt democracy after British rule. I’ve read democracy can be pretty bad for a poor country‘s development.

There are just too many hurdles with respect to India, some as mentioned above, and most are related to culture such as habits, discipline, work ethic, and so on, to be a viable competitor to China. There has to be major changes in the Indian society for it to make good headway in manufacturing at a global level. Indians are very resistant to cultural change, compared to the Far easterners. In other areas like Software, India appears to be reasonably good, though quality still needs to be improved.

You started a thread about the exact same thing with the exact same title only a few months ago.

If you had something new to contribute, why didn't you simply post in that thread? If you didn't, why are you wasting our time?
