Maratha is a caste among Marathi people, since Maratha replaced Mughals in most of India and found a huge Empire, their caste name came to be associated with people and language. The region that comprise Maharashtra and Goa today spoke a dialect of Prakrit named Maharashtri Prakrit.

maratha probably was not a caste but the name of the region. The ''maratha'' people peobably came to be associated with the name of the region.

the rashtrakutas were also called rattas, and the above evidence indicates that maharatha was the name of maharashtra region or some of its parts.
