When Ranald Mackenzie and his 4th Cavalry penetrated Palo Duro Canyon in Texas and destroyed a Comanche and Kiowa village and horse herd there during the Red River War, 1874. Casualties on both sides were light but the destruction of supplies and horses was devastating to the Indians.

The Red River War ended with all the American Indians of the southern Great Plains subdued and on reservations. That was it.
