The tern "limbo" unfortunately is the best definition at this time. Like I said unfortunately. As an independent country it would collapse immediately. The cause would be money, i.e. everything from their commerce and industry to infastructure and population. They just don't have the money, the labot force, the investments, etc. to survive.
Those are also factors in the possibility of other foreign powers becoming involved in the Caribbean with an independent P.R. "Assistance" and "advice" from outside the Western Hemisphere are often pseudonyms for a military presence or economic leverage over the recipient of such largesse. Russia, for instance, does not need Venezuela's oil. Their interest in that country is for different reasons.

No, to dilute and diminish US influence in the Hemisphere, and particularly in the Caribbean, an area of extremely vital US interest. Russia never gave a damn about Cuba; it doesn't give a damn about Nicaragua or Venezuela. The USSR didn't give a damn about Chile either. Whether it was the USSR or it is the Russian Federation, geopolitical advantage is in distracting and diverting US attention and resources away from Europe. In the case of China, it is in diverting and distracting the US away from east Asia. The PRC doesn't care about Peru or Venezuela or Bolivia. China's vital interests are in Asia.

I agree with Puerto Rico. Nothing strategically useful, no economic contributions and a populice that leaves in droves. More PR's in New York than in PR.

Philippines. As soon as the island was occupied, the USA had to deal with terrorism until its independence. Possession of the island pushed japan to attack the USA as it could strangle supply lines to Indonesia that they planned to conquer. If we didn’t take the Philippines, the pacific war could have been avoided as japan just wanted to act like Britain of Asia

In terms of the impact the land itself has had, Louisiana. Basically US major cities draw a line around the Purchase. Was very important as a stepping stone to other stuff mainly that was important.
