I think the idea of descent from the Medes comes from Minorsky and isn’t new. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume a lot of their ancestors were Zoroastrian. Some people say the Yazidi religion was the religion of all Kurds in the past but I don’t think that’s true. Some do have Yazidi ancestors who had to convert and I don’t think this was the majority.

Kurdish people are still overwhelmingly Muslim and I have not seen Zoroastrianism pushed as a policy by Kurdish governments. Iraqi Kurdistan has 2 prominent Muslim political parties which are part of the 5 main parties but not the strongest 2 parties.

I live in the most liberal part of Iraqi Kurdistan so sometimes I forget this but other areas are much more conservative.
