What if gold was never discovered in California in the mid 1800s? How would the westward migration in America look? Would it have taken people another 10-20-50 years to move out west?

Westward expansion was already starting, so I don't believe that it would take that many years, I believe it would take at most 10. To get to the other side of the country however, it would take the US government to find a plausible reason to invest in the land other then expansion. Had gold not been found, California would not have become as populated in my opinion, at least not until the Immigrants and Illegals began to flood into the country.

Colorado might have become more populated because people would be focused on the silver rush instead. California would populated by outlaw cowboys and Mexicans.
