Notre Dame on fire

I don't think the rebuilding is going to be the issue. I think all the artistry that is going to have be recreated will be the most time consuming
By renovation I meant artists as well. I should written 'restorers' and artists. Russians call them 'restorers' . The teams have artists specialising on restoring paintings, sculptures, statues, mosaics in old architecture etc.

Seems like President Macaron wants to destroy Notre Dame. Well, "redesign", but the end result is the same. Is there no limit to his contempt for Western civilization?

LOL! Yeah, modern architects do overemphasize glass and steel. Whoever undertakes this restoration may have to establish an entirely new industry. 700-800 year old construction techniques and the craftsmanship of the next 500 years will be hard to find.

The ego maniacs are evidently already linging up to glorify themselves.

The restoration will be difficult and five years is not enough. Currently , destroyed ancient Palmyra is being restored. This is what the director of National Museum of Damascus is saying:

“The work is very difficult,” he said. “The terrorists broke the sculptures into many pieces and we are putting them together literally piece by piece.” The Russian specialists are “giving advice on restoring mosaics and fine details of the cultural treasures,” he added. “This is very important assistance.” The National Museum, which has been closed during the war, is soon due to reopen

Ptijatelj, it's good to verify sources, especially "sources" like mesages on Face-de-bouq. Better: forgetting militants on social media.

1."La fleche" (the spire) was erected around 1220-1220. Doe to the weakening of its structure, it was dismanteled in the 1780's. In 1850, Notre Dame de Paris looked like this:

During the restoration of the Notre Dame, the second architect in charge, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, designed and made built the new spire (the one we knew), a spire of his own design. It was inaugurated on 15th of august 1859

2. PM Phillipe announced that the Government will propose a law regarding the reconstruction.

Amongst others, an international contest will opened, a contest that will answer to the spire question:

"il permettra de trancher la question de savoir s'il faut reconstruire une flèche, s'il faut reconstruire la flèche qui avait été pensée et construite par Viollet-Le-Duc à l'identique, ou s'il faut, comme c'est souvent le cadre et le cas dans l'évolution du Patrimoine et l'évolution des cathédrales, doter la cathédrale d'une nouvelle flèche adaptée aux techniques et aux enjeux de notre époque"

in other words, the Government is opening an international contest for finding an (advised, presumably) answer to thee posibilities:

- not building a spire at all
- rebuild Le-Duc's 19th c spire
- a spire based on a new design.

Bref, not exactly what some hurried to bring as news. Not Your fault, ofcourse: a lot of media doesn't find the time to listen more than 10 sec of a speech any more.

... Is there no limit to his contempt for Western civilization? ...
Nope, there isn't.

Tho, the same kind of phrases were to be heard and red all around in France one century ago. Referring to this monstruos atrocity disfigurating Paris:
