The War of the One-Eyed Woman, 1601. The head of Clan Macdonald, Dòmhnall, was kind of a dick, and in a trial marriage with the sister of Ruaraidh MacLeòid. She lost an eye during the trial, and when it ended without issue he sent her back to her brother tied backwards to a one-eyed horse, accompanied by a one-eyed servant with a one-eyed dog. The dog was also a mongrel, because, as said - kind of a dick.

The two families went to war for the next two years, and several hundred people died, including Macleod's cousin. The Crown's response was to plan the extermination of the entire Hebridean population, but the plans were never carried out due to the man who was supposed to put them in motion - George Gordon, Marquess of Huntly - getting himself in hot water over his Catholic faith.

This song was supposedly composed by the foster-mother of Dòmhnall mac Iain 'ic Sheumais, a commander at the Battle of Carinish, to ease the pain of an arrow-wound.
