I'm not a Picasso fan either, but his work was an important artistic exploration. Even Dali, whos work shocked and delighted the public at the time was in retrospect just another artistic exploration. For much of western art history, the emphasis was on beauty and skill and narrative, but painting could be and has been so much more; today, there are painters and other artists working in many different styles and techniques with many different goals; something which wouldn't have been possible without the rule-breakers, whackadoodle visionaries, and turpentine swigging geniuses of the past.
