Respect for France Thread

Oh I do wish that in a thread started in praise of a country, not everything was about war, war, war.
Well, this thread actually started because of war discussion. It was an answer to thread about English naming their ship after Agincourt and how French don't have ships named after victories, because they never had them. Thread was ,, How to annoy French ''.

Still, there were other posters who praised France for things besides war. I also had several posts listing some of accomplishments in other fields.

In terms of Nobel Prize laureates France holds 4th place in the world. Only USA, UK and Germany have more.
USA - 371
UK - 129
Germany - 108
France - 68

Before Nobel Prizes, there were also many French who made very important contributions in various scientific fields and discoveries. Some of the names :
Blaise Pascal
Andre Ampere
Antoine Lavoisier
Charles-Augustin de Coulomb
Joseph-Louis Lagrange
Pierre-Simon Laplace
Pierre de Fermat
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck
Sadi Carnot
d'Alembert
Denis Papin
Jean-Francois Champollion
Rene Descartes
Joseph Fourier
Montgolfier brothers
Jean-Victor Poncelet

When it come to sports.
France has won 2 World Cups ( 1998, 2018 ) and 2 European Championships ( 1984, 2000 ) in football.

6 times French players have won Ballon D'or.
Raymond Kopa - 1958
Michel Platini - 1983, 1984 , 1985
Jean-Pierre Papin - 1991
Zinedine Zidane - 1998

Just Fontaine holds record for most goals scored in single World Cup tournament - 13.

Pierre de Coubertin was founder of International Olympic Committee and is considered the father of modern Olympic Games. Second Olympic Games were held in Paris in 1900.

France holds 5th place in number of Olympic medals. France won 840 medals.

French Open or Rolland-Garros is one of the 4 annual Grand Slam tournaments.

Tour de France is also one the most famous sporting events.

Alain Prost is 4 time F1 World Champion. Won titles in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993. Had famous rivalry with Ayrton Senna. Shares same amount of titles with Hamilton and Vettel. Only Schumacher and Fangio have more.

Rugby team of France is one of the strongest in the world. France reached Rugby World Cup Final in 1987, 1999 and 2011. In 1995, 2003 and 2007 they were stopped in the Semi-Final. France won 3rd place in 1995 and took 4th place in 2003 and 2007.

In self-defence, as the starter of that thread, I said nothing about any French defeats. I’ve nothing against the French, well except for a taxi driver in Provence but that happens everywhere. The thread title was meant to be tongue in cheek and obviously failed, I’m sorry some took it all too seriously.

What's problem with my list ? I recognize both French victories and French defeats.
The problem with your list is simply the list... it is not so easy to say "winner" and "loser"... and of course, in that war.. France was not the winner... not military victory at all and not the end of the Hegemony. In the list... you are talking about France as if "France" would have fought alone... I can say Haiti won Two World Wars and Germany lost Two World Wars... and What?

Lists mean nothing about knowledge....it is not a right base. Nothing more.

December 11th, 1941: Haiti declared war on Germany
July 12th, 1918: Haiti declared war on Germany.

List of Haitian victories in 20th Century:

1914 - 1918: Haiti Victory
1939 - 1945: Haitian Victory

Final result: Haiti 2 - Germany 0

The same about your list or any kind of list.

Well, i agree with you that it's more complicated than that. Though I don't think Haiti is accurate comparison. France was major player and participant in wars that I listed. Part of them had successful result for France. Some specifically for France or for whole coalition that France was part of. Otherwise, we also can say that USSR and Haiti were on equal footing, because both won WWII.

I agree with you.. Gvelion.. France was not Haiti... but so..... if you are talking about 17th Century... so we must to count who fought in more numbers of wars.. Spain or France? Who fought against more enemies? who fought more times in TYW? France? of course not....
So... if you said French Army was better in 1618-1648... I say.. NO WAY. (Not even the French General wrote their infantry were in the same level than the Spanish one...by the Way Condé DIDN´T win Rocroy with the French Infantry...unable to break the Spanish lines... (And I am a specialist in Rocroy)...

So... you are right... Haiti was not France but ... maybe one people not very "cultivated" in military history...reading your list... can think France had a better army in 1618-1648 than Spain... and it was not truth...Peninsular War was lost by France... and French Army was better... in 1618-1648... Spanish army was better...outnumbered? Yes... a worst Cavalry? Yes... but no way French infantry was better... remember...the French Infantry DIDN´T prove to be better.

I agree with you on this, my friend. I also wouldn't put French army of 1618 - 1648 at top. France takes place as dominant power in 1660's. However finally solidified it's place only after 1679 and victory in Dutch War. However, it didn't last long. Certainly, it was considerably shorter than Spanish dominance decades prior.
