What happened to the lacing?
The lacing worked well and made things more flexible, but it took a toll on the lacing. It could be that one could use thicker laces and make the holes at the vertices larger, but the shearing and other forces the lace is subject to, argues against it, especially over large areas. The links make it a more rigid, but there is still movement. By curving each scale along an axis, any necessary curvature can be obtained, easily. As each link is independent and connected to another scale, it is incredibly tough. I used stainless on the links and they are work hardened and very tough. Looking at most depictions, it's clear that it is fairly rigid.
