In the Gulag Archipelago*, Soviet prisons and the gulag work camps were described in great detail and in how terrible it was to end up in one. However, I can't find much information of what it was like to get imprisoned in the USSR decades after Stalin's death, were Soviet prisons and work camps after 1953 as terrible as the Stalin years?

I was only able to read half of it before my copy was stolen, along with other possessions of mine, sadly

I would suggest reading One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich( as well as cancer ward). However, can't really say about post-Stalin years, other than that I will bet my money it wasn't so harsh.
