In many cases, amateur historians are just as knowledgeable as the professionals. They both cite an abundance of primary source material in their works, and arrive at their conclusions based upon an examination of the evidence. That is exactly what any historian would do.
Just like Holacaust deniers.

You mean they participated in a rally to protest anti-white racism and the desecration of Confederate monuments?

Those evil bastards! /s
Yes the guys who killed people in an act of terrorism and the night before were marching shouting blood and soil, and Jews will not replace us. You're literally citing vermin.

The Charlottesville rally was organized and attended by explicit neo-nazis who engaged in violence, chanted racist and anti-Semetic slogans, and surrounded churches, not to mention the murder which the organizers of the rally did not condemn. And I just quoted the explicitly racist statements of the League's leaders.

The problem is that amateur historians do not understand the proper methods in how to study history. Most of the time, amateurs are led by their own preconceived notions which skews the data and skews their conclusions. It is the reason why we have a lot of pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, etc. because they don't have the methods training to make an objective analysis of those sources.
