Sunday, April 2, a soldier hands Jefferson Davis, who is seated in the front row of St. Paul's Church, a message from Robert E. Lee. It says the Union forces have broken through at Petersburg and Lee recommends evacuating Richmond immediately. Davis leaves the church immediately and the Confederate government heads to Danville, Virginia.

Monday, April 3, Union soldiers enter Richmond, which is in flames. Tuesday, April 4, Lincoln visits Richmond, sits down in Davis' chair and is mobbed by former slaves, some of them kneeling at his feet.

Sunday, April 9, Lee surrenders at Appomatax. Friday, April 14, Good Friday, Lincoln is shot during a performance at Fords Theater.
