Former Roman Empire
I have just started watching GOT(no spoilers!!!!season 4) and I have been thinking about the inspiration GRRM takes from history.
What are some of the ones you have noticed?
Some obvious ones:
-Dothraki-Mongols/Turks/Scythians
-Andals-Saxons
-Children of the Forrest-Romans
-Qarth-Constantinople
-Dorne-Andalusia
-Bravos-Rhodes/Vecine/other trading city state
etc

Definitely the Wars of the Roses. The king dies, and his son is suspected to be illegitimate. The hated wealthy Lannisters are effectively the hated wealthy Woodvilles who have squirmed their way into positions of power, whilst the Starks are the Northerners led by Gloucester. The difference here is what Gloucester did that Ned didn't.

The Boltons may have been inspired by either the Assyrians, or more likely Essex during the Dark Ages, there's old stories of how we had the custom of flaying Vikings alive and nailing the skin to our Church doors - though, upon further reading of this story, it's possible the whole thing was a hoax achieved with pig skins.

Wouldn't COTF be more akin to your garden variety, native/indigenous cultures?

I always thought of Babylon/Mesopotamia/Ancient Egypt when the Ghiscari/Meerenese were described.

Summer Islanders=Sub-Saharan Africans.

Grey Joy=Norse.

Good call above, Edward I=Tywin.

The Seven=The Catholic Church.

Flagellants=Sparrows.

Martin said the Valyrians represent the Romans and the Ghiscari Carthage.
The Kingdom of Westeros was clearly inspired by the Wars of the Roses...Cersei resembling Margaret of Anjou, Robert Baratheon Edward IV, Talisa Stark Elizabeth Woodville(?). Could Eddard Stark be inspired by Lord Hastings? or maybe Richard of York.
