Indian National Congress had two factions within them, one Left leaning led by Nehru and rightist led by Patel. By 1968, the rightist factions left congress and joined Jan Sangh(ancestral party of BJP) to form Janata Party. First Janata Party Prime Minister Morarji Desai was previously in Congress.Yeah, the Himalayas would certainly provide an excellent defensive barrier for India. The Soviets are probably going to need to use paratroopers if they'll actually want to cross the Himalayas. Also, as you said, alienating Nehru would have been an extremely stupid move on the part of the USSR since he was relatively pro-Soviet (in spite of him being a socialist rather than a Communist).
