The Right of Asylum Throughout History

Nov 2016
“And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.” (Koran 9: 96).
This is yet another example of how easily a Quranic verse can be misunderstood if quoted without context.

First, it is verse 9:6 but not 9:96 which you quote.

The context is that if a non-Muslim tribe has broken a peace treaty with the Muslims, the Muslims give that tribe four months to repent and make peace with them again. At the end of the four months, if this has not happened, the non-Muslim tribe will be attacked. Individual members of this tribe, who want to make peace, may seek protection with the Muslims by hearing the word of Allah and being brought to a safe place until the end of the battle.

This has nothing to do with asylum in the true sense of the word. It only applies to members of an attacked tribe.

I´ll come back to your other arguments later.
