Nice reading, good that the partition happened, otherwise life would not have been as peaceful. Everyone got what they desired. Red Star reading did not prove true. Princes did not have much influence in Nehru era and were disposed off by Indira. India has had a continued good relationship with Russia. ;)

Had partition never happened, there was hardly any chance of foreign presence in Indian border with Afghanistan, which would have benefited the Soviets. But Pakistan was a good riddance for Indians.

This would have also helped the US had it still eventually gotten involved in Afghanistan, no?

If an undivided India had a extremist Muslim prime Minister, it would have been a greater problem for all, Russia and America, Hindus and Christians. With 33% Muslims, that would certainly have been possible.

He would have gotten no Hindu support, though.

With the internal dissensions and varying interests of Hindu society, 33% would have been a sure winner. Even now the Muslim vote which is just 15% (larger in some regions, we have a few Muslim majority constituencies), is very important for parties other than Bharatiya Janata Party (the so-called Hindu Party).

In India, there has always been paranoia against foreign interference, it was highly likely no foreign power would have got military bases in India to keep an eye on Afghanistan but at the same time Hindu-Muslim relation would have been so fragile and weaker central government at Delhi in case partition never happened.
