Simply, who would you have have cheered on during the Winter War between the Finns and the USSR?

The Finns, obviously. Stalin made a huge mistake in picking a fight with Finland since this subsequently caused Finland to join the Axis in order to reconquer its lost lands.

I do think that the USSR's claim to western Ukraine and western Belarus was legitimate, though. This could simply be viewed as being national reunification movements and thus as unintentionally paving the way for a united Ukraine and a united Belarus to emerge several decades later.

Definitely the Finns... I didn't know the Winter War was what caused Finland to join the Axis. Weren't western Ukraine and western Belarus part of the USSR? I'm asking as I'm not familiar with the borders of the time. Who do you think won the Winter War? The Finns did a great job of fighting back against Josef Stalin who was unable to annex their entire country. However the USSR did succeed in annexing about 11% of Finnish territory.

Yeah, AFAIK, they wanted to reconquer their lost territory.

Only since 1939; before, they were a part of Poland.

I think that the USSR won the Winter War but it was only a partial victory rather than a total victory.

The extent of the USSR victory depends on what you think their goal was. Their primary goal was to force Finland to cede territory in order to better protect Leningrad. And they achieved this. However, their establishment of the Terijoki government indicates that Moscow also wanted to create a new, socialist regime in Finland. In this they failed.

But the result of the war is not disputed. The Finns fought excellently, but they definitely lost.

I think before 1939 western Ukraine had never been part of Russia or USSR.
