This debate has been ongoing for certain periods of time in multiple threads, most notably the one about China. Let's try to compile a chronology of the most powerful empire/nation on the planet.

Here's an amateurish and most likely very flawed template:

3000BC-2270BC: Old Kingdom of Egypt
2270BC-2130BC : Akkadian Empire
2130BC-2030BC: ??????? I don't know if the Indus Valley Civilization was a single entity
2030BC-1940BC: Ur Empire
1940BC-1786BC: Middle Kingdom of Egypt
1786BC-1733BC: Xia dynasty
1733BC-1711BC: Assyrian Empire
1711BC-1660BC: Babylonian Empire
1660BC-1600BC: Xia dynasty
1600BC-1500BC: Shang dynasty
1500BC-1080BC: New Kingdom of Egypt
1080BC-1046BC: Shang dynasty
1046BC-771BC: Zhou dynasty
771BC-740BC: Kingdom of Urartu
740BC-620BC: Assyrian Empire
620BC-608BC: Median Empire
608BC-590BC: Neo-Babylonian Empire
590BC-550BC: Median Empire
550BC-330BC: Achaemenid Empire
330BC-300BC: Macedonian Empire
300BC-221BC: Maurya Empire
221BC-30BC: Han dynasty
30BC-395AD: Roman Empire
395AD-603AD: Göktürk Khaganate
603AD-618AD: Sui dynasty
618AD-755AD: Tang dynasty
755AD-770AD: Abbasid Caliphate
770AD-907AD: Tang dynasty(maybe Holly Roman Empire at the end?)
907AD-980AD: Byzantine Empire/Holly Roman Empire/Caliphates???
980AD-1142AD: Song dynasty
1142AD-1207AD: Jin dynasty
1207AD-1271AD: Mongol Empire
1271AD-1371AD: Yuan dynasty
1371AD-1394AD: one of the mongol hordes?/Ming dynasty?
1394AD-1406AD: Timurid Empire
1406AD-1556AD: Ming dynasty
1556AD-1659AD: Spanish Empire(I'm getting really shabby from here on)
1659AD-1804AD: French Empire
1804AD-1871AD: Russian Empire???
1871AD-1945-German-British and German again? No clue...
1945AD-present: USA

So can the more knowledgeable posters correct the timeline where I made mistakes?

1659AD-1804AD: French Empire
1804AD-1871AD: Russian Empire???
France had its title of the greatest wrestled away in 1763. Between 1795 and 1812 it was probably undoubtedly at the No. 1 spot again. After 1814 or so until 1871 Britain was the sole superpower. From 1871 Germany became a contender followed by the USA but I believe that until at least 1941 Britain was No.1.

On paper he ruled probably more land. In practice it was a composite monarchy with many problems. He spent decades fighting the German protestants. The spaniards regarded him as a foreign prince and he had to keep the legitimate queen Joanna (his own mother) imprisoned for alleged mental issues. Ultimately he divided his empire between Philip II of Spain (who centralized in Madrid the dominions he inherited) and Ferdinand I of Austria (he had to implement the "Cuius regio eius religio" in the dominions he got). So I don't know.

Probably the Ming Empire was the most powerul (certainly the more populated) but the Emperor deciding to retire to isolation in 1600 started its demise.

I was hoping someone would clear up the Göktürk Khaganate period. They were even split in some periods so it might be that some other empires could sneak in that period.
