It is a long answer:
The spanish army was organized since 1934 to resist to a popular revolution and not to fight against his neighbours;France, portugal etc....In these conditions, the army was organized in "territorial divisions" to control all the territory, and not in "agrupaciones de combate" for campaigns on the fronteers. This theory was at the basis, of the spanish strategy since the revolutionars movements of 1909 (Marocco, defeat of Barranco de Lobo) and 1917 (strikes and fights in Catalonia and big cities). The asturian revolution of 1934 obliged the government to confort this politic.
The army was in the hands of conservative and catholics generals:the best elements, after the evacuation of Cuba and the Philippines (1898) were stationned in Marocco, and some others in the Canaries. There was in Spain no real possibility of carreer, and when the Republic was proclamed the generals were opposed to the new politic of the regime because it was clear that it significates the disparition of 50 %of the efectives. With 80 000 men the spanish army had more general officers than France, which mobilized 8 000 000 of men in 1914-1918.The fascists organizations found in this problem the way to recruit a lot of their best elements in the Union Militar Espanola. In front of them, the Republic could not use the "Guardia Civil" military force-equivalent of the french gendarmerie-composed with a lot of members of the extreme right (one batallion in each province) and created the "Guardia de Asalto" civil force of police composed with members of the republican organizations, and socialo-comunists.In 1935,soviets organizations were constitued in a lot of régiments, with the mission to obtain the maximum of informations to prevent the future "sanjurjadas" (ridiculous putsch of the general Sanjurjo). The CNT did not participate to this counter attack because it was convinced of the complicity of the radicals (Lerroux etc...) with the army.
The putsch of july 1936 degenerated in a long civil war for two reasons:
-the transmissions were in majority for the Republic and created the biggest difficulties for the putschists, just the time to give weapons for the population.
-the soviets of the MAOC ("milicias antifascistas obreras y campesinas") and the anarcho-syndicalists of the CDO ("comitades de defensa obera") neutralize a lot of units. The general officers could not hind their political positions and some of them were executed in conformity with the Spanish Military Code, which ordered the death to the militaries who were guilty of trahison against their government. It is necessary to precise that a law permitted to the officers to leave definitively the army if they decided to break unilaterally their engagement of fidelity with the government. It was clear:fidelity or retreat.

How many generals were there and how many were executed. Listing this case and that case leads to nothing at all.

Source for this claim ?

Ho many generals were there?
How many were killed?
The issue was quantified, and the percentage of Generals that participated in the coup and died in the next days is pretty high. I also recall reading numbers around 50%. Unfortunately, didn’t locate or recall the source. I will post it if I get it.

I think one Nationalist leader was captured by the Republicans and shot. Some people thought Franco rose to the top by eliminating the competition.

There is a story / joke that when Franco was dying a priest asked him to forgive his enemies and Franco replied, " I don't have any enemies. I killed them all." Presumably, it referred to those Nationalist leaders as well as Republicans executed.
At least Sanjurjo seemed to have died in an accident, by his own stupidity. The plane was too heavy when it took off, and he had been advised not to take too many stuff with him.
