March Block in “Métier d'historien” (The Historian's Craft) can give you a good help to your research. It is an unfinished work, written before and during WWII (he was in the French resistance and was shot by the Germans), but in my opinion is still quite actual.

But I would say that one of the most important skills of an historian is his critical capacity to read and analyse the sources, a skill developed by the historical method.

As an old teacher of mine said to a group of students once: You don’t only need to read the sources in the lines, that everybody can do. You must read between the lines, understand why the sources says what it says, the motifs, the society, the ideology and the paradigm behind the text.
