The USA is often referred to as America but it is actually "......of America." The name comes from Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine banker whose family was close the Medici. He made several voyages to South America. from 1499. He apparently sailed as far as Cape Horn and determined that there was no connection with Asia. He never explored North America.His name was later put on a map in an area now in modern Brazil as "Amerigo" or America. Because of its central location on the map, the name came to be used for the New World
