What is the source of "If only Britain did not declare war on Nazi Germany her Empire would still be intact" theory ?

There was never an imperial title that covered the entire empire. Nevertheless the monarch had a formal relationship with every British possession and still has with some former dominions and colonies.
Yeah there was:

Edward VII formal title was

By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India

The imperial title applied only to India as it was then constituted AFAIK. It's a formality but the British Empire never had an official "Emperor of the British Empire".

I think people forget that the age of Empire was over. There's no sane reason for wanting to keep it intact. It would not be an asset to the treasury, just the monstrous drain of maintaining it.

Never seen that view pushed anywhere.
and had we not bothered with WW2, as well Europe being a horrible and depressing place, the British empire would have crumbled anyway. It had been fragmenting since the 1860s... Canada, Australia, NZ were part of the empire but essentially independent and self governing. South Africa would follow... WW1 highlighted the decline of British power (well, the rest of the world had caught up anyway).

WW1 was responsible for speeding up the process. But without it the empire was still doomed... it’s relatively peaceful break up occurred as I don’t think Britain had the stomach for major wars against freedom after fighting two huge ones in the name of it. With out WW1 we would have had bloody wars of independence in India for sure...
