What role did the Roman Senate play under the emperors?

How powerful were they?

Were they still elected? Appointed?

Did all the same offices and positions remain? Consul, praetor, etc?

Was having a Senate all just a sham, a masquerade during the time of the emperors?

Maybe the Senate was more influential and relevant at different times under different emperors?

Relative to the emperor they had no real role of substance, they were a ceremonial fa├žade of modest import. They had a role, but all their power stemmed from what a stable emperor or army was willing to bestow them. It was only in a time of crisis where one of their number might have the chance to seize the mantle of emperor (and even that was tough).
