What was the significance of the color scarlet to ancient rome I know purple was worn by the ruling class was the color scarlet worn by important people?

As I wrote in the other thread, there is nothing significant about the color scarlet to associate with the elite of Roman society, outside the context of religion (red as a whole has legit association with the Gods Jupiter Optimus Maximus and Mars both). Could they have worn it otherwise? Yes, rich people can wear anything they want, they're rich. But it was a color made from a couple different types of cheap dye that were not color fast (they faded easily to unintended colors), used by "commoners," possibly in the military because it if paint or dye was needed, it was one of the cheapest and most available.
