Imagine a world without bananas. This fungus that is killing the plants is spreading.

“The future looks bleak,” says Altus Viljoen, the South African plant pathologist who organized the conference. "There’s no way they’ll be able to stop any further spread if they continue to farm.” Worse, he says, the disease's rapid spread endangers banana crops beyond Mozambique’s borders.

Bananas are a particularly vulnerable crop. The massed produced ones all have the same DNA and as such will die out if just one fungus proves particularly effective against it. It's not like apples where there are a slew of varieties to offset any setbacks.

The mass produced bananas faced a similar crisis in the 1960s and petered out. Today, what we eat is a different variety. If you notice a taste difference with canned bananas in pies and such, it's because they are actually derived from the older variety of bananas.

Then, it may come down to molecular biolgists being able to make the plants mutate.

As anyone who travelled or lived in the tropics knows there are dozens and dozens of varieties of Bananas it's just a matter of finding a variety that's easy to mass produce-there is no need to panic.

Well, it's becoming harder to find them in supermarkets in Hong Kong. Those other varieties have gone up in price, as well.

This is complex, Banana were a exellent source of vitamin,
hope that scientists dont delay to act.

I guess it won't have to worry about Brazilian Wandering Spiders anymore.
:lol:do not believe it, Banana is not original from the American continent, was introduced by the Portuguese, Wandering spider lived for thousands of years without Banana
if the bananas end up the wandering will stay strong and kicking:lol:
